During your Flameworking Glass Discovery experience, you will work one-on-one with a professional glass instructor to create a variety of spring-themed beads. Students create 1-5 small beads measuring approximately 1/4 to 1/2 an inch in diameter.
Each student will get their own workstation equipped with a Flameworking torch and all the tools and colors needed to create your unique glass beads. An experienced instructor will lead with a demonstration and guide individuals through the process. Participants will then spend the remainder of the time melting colored glass rods using a tabletop torch and shape them into beads using tools, heat, and gravity. This class is perfect for beginners who would like to try their hands at Flameworking glass. Due to hot glass needing to be cooled at a slow rate, completed pieces will be ready for pickup in the days following your Discovery experience. This Glass Discovery experience uses 104 COE glass rods.
No experience required and all materials are provided.
3 hours in duration.
Age: Full age requirement guidelines can be found here.
Minors ages 9-13 are allowed to participate with the presence of a parent/guardian.
Minors ages 14-17 are allowed to work independently with parent’s permission (signed guardian release form on file).
Open to adults of any age
Waivers: All students and parents of minor students are required to read and sign a waiver, which indicates all of the safety risks involved with glassmaking and provides contact information.
Class Size: Strictly limited to 6 individuals per session. For safety reasons no additional non-participating spectators or guests may join you for your experience, since space and seating is limited. For individuals who need accommodations or have caretakers, reach out to us in advance so we can advise on how to best prepare for your time at the studio and modify our space if needed.
Health: It is the responsibility of the student to take care of themselves if they possess any health or cognitive conditions that could be affected by working in Foci MCGA’s facilities. It is the responsibility of the student to notify staff of such conditions, should it affect their health and impair regular studio operations.
Impairment: Students are not permitted to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol during class.
Clothing: Please wear comfortable cotton clothing that can get dirty and avoid items made from highly synthetic materials. Participants may want to consider wearing a breathable long sleeve shirt to protect their arms from heat. Shorts must be longer for protection during hot glass experiences. Please wear closed toe shoes that cover the foot entirely (no crocs or sandals). You may want to bring something to drink as the studio can get hot and the work can be strenuous. Our studio also has a water fountain. Foci MCGA will provide safety glasses, but you are welcome to bring your own.
Gallery Special: Customers who spend $40 or more in the gallery receive 1 free "Foci-Made" pulled glass flower. The sale runs from April 19-May 11, 2025. Limit one free flower per customer, while supplies last.
