Out of the Ashes // Memorializing Loss
A collaborative workshop with Threads Dance Project
Over the course of two days, participants will honor their loved ones through movement and glassworking workshops led by Threads Dance Project and Foci Minnesota Center for Glass Arts.
Few people know that the Twin Towers at the World Trade Center were most significantly constructed of glass--a substance at times strong and malleable or fragile and rigid. This material serves as a poignant metaphor for how one can feel in the face of grief and loss. Threads and Foci MCGA invite participants to discover the expressive potential of our mediums in this joint offering.
Glass Sessions 1A or 1B---Takes place at Foci Minnesota Center for Glass Arts 10/22 and 10/23 respectively. In the glass studio, participants will have hands-on experience working with molten glass as they learn how to shape and move the material of glass into a sculptural form. Glass is an amorphous solid, its phase changes allow us as artists to explore the creative potential of the material to represent processes of grief, trauma, and repair.
Movement Session 2--Attendees from both earlier sessions will join together at 7:30 pm on Saturday, October 23rd, for a movement session at The Threads Dance Nexus--a studio space in the building adjoining Foci Glass Arts. Participants will be guided through discussion and movement exercises where they can share their experience of working with glass, write, and generate movement in remembrance of their own personal loss. It is not necessary that guests have lost loved ones in the 9/11 attacks. Workshops are open to any and everyone wishing to memorialize a loved one in a creative and meaningful way.
Location: Both The Threads Dance Nexus and Foci Minnesota Center for Glass Arts are located at 2213 Snelling Avenue, Minneapolis, MN 55404. Free street and lot parking is available at the E 22nd Street entrances.
Proof of vaccination must be provided. Face coverings will be required indoors.
